Zone of Proximinal Development - The theoretical construct of Vygotsky which states that learning occurs best when an expert guides a novice from the novice's current level of knowledge to the expert's level of knowledge (or a closer approximation thereof). The "distance" between the learner's current knowledge and the expert's is the "zone." "Proximal" refers to the learner's approximations of the expert's knowledge.
