Current Definition

Two entities, A and B, stand in a dialectical relationship if they are co-dependent in the sense that the nature of A depends upon the nature of B and vice versa. For instance, in the dialectic of master and slave as analyzed by Hegel in his Phenomenology of Mind someone can only be a master if he has slaves who respect him as their master, yet the slave is only a slave in that he has a master who treats him as his slave. Dialectical reasoning proceeds by successively uncovering the distinctions of dialectical relationships through a process of specific negation.
