Current Definition intersubjectivity
Intersubjectivity is a form of shared consciousness. It may be peculiar to humans and the basis for human cultures. The illness known as autism may be largely attributable to a failure to engage in intersubjectivity, and is an indication of how central intersubjectivity is to social life. Intersubjectivity begins with the bonding of mother and infant and forms the foundation for communication and mutual understanding. Consciousness is always intentional, i.e., it is always consciousness of something as something, it is a focus on some object of consciousness. Intersubjectivity means that two (or more) people are conscious of the same thing at the same time - and they are conscious of the fact that they are both sharing this consciousness.
