Current Definition

Consciousness is always consciousness from a specific perspective. One can say that when I am conscious of something I am conscious of it from my perspective. I.e., the way that I take the object of my consciousness depends on my interests, my goals, my background, my current circumstances. However, it is also possible for me to take something from someone else's perspective, for me to adopt the perspective of someone whose perspective I think I understand. This act of taking someone else's perspective may originate in an experience of "intersubjectivity" with that other person. Later, I may be able to adopt that perspective when the person is not around. Then I have internalized it. Gradually, my personal perspective can incorporate perspectives that I have shared. In fact, I probably only become aware of myself and my perspective through a reflexive awareness of other people as aware of me.
