Vision
The LivingBook vision is an information space that will evolve as a side effect of interaction between readers.
The Living Book Model
The LivingBook information space is seeded with the current version of the book entitled A New Understanding of Design and It's Computational Support.
The seed is to form a starting point for conversations, debates and enhancements of the ideas it contains. In this sense, the LivingBook aims to blur the traditional distinction between readers and authors. We hope to engage a "community of interest" who will enrich the seed with new ideas and new connections to related information. The interaction between the community of interest will result in an evolutionary growth of the Livingbook information space.
The LivingBook Model
Periodically, the LivingBook will be "reseeded" to incorporate the new ideas and information constructed during the evolutionary growth phase. The result of reseeding will be a new seed which will again support the community of interest as a vehicle for discussion, learning and knowledge construction.
Motivation
The motivation for the LivingBook comes from a long struggle to publish a book in a rapidly changing domain: Computational Support for Design. During this time, we have come to realize that our message can never be complete and current - the subject matter changes faster than we can articulate our views!
At the same time, the core issues and research challenges discussed in the book remain largely unsolved. Struggling with wicked problems, finding relevant information in a world where there is too much information, and overcoming the limits of the individual mind, . . . These issues are fundamentally hard and will remain with us for years and decades to come. In the meantime, the contexts for understanding and resolving these issues will continue to change, and new insights and approaches will continue to arise.
It is our vision that the LivingBook will become a forum for talking about the core issues of Design and It's Computational Support, the many manifestations of these issues, and new approaches for understanding and resolving them. We have found that our domain is too large and rapidly changing to capture and cover the subject matter in the form of a conventional book. Instead, we are attempting to lay the ground work for a new type of book that is an ongoing conversation among extended community that can be and remain informative, relevant and vital.
