I finally got 'round to analogies Jonathan asked for. Sorry to paste them below, but can't find Eudora on these computers. Anyway, they're below. Andrew, Jaye, feel free to edit and add.
Michael, the first 30 minutes to an hour of our meeting on Thursday should provide useful discussion re the overall plans and specific strategies. So, 12:30, in Jonathan's 7th floor suite.
Virtual Library Analogies VL Team/11.4.97
The Real Thing The Virtual Thang (i.e., the one that really matters)
Reference Room - Online sources for reference work (e.g., online access to reference section of Electric Library, CD-Rom of an encyclopedia, bookmarks for web sites that are referentially oriented)
Periodical Room - Online sources for magazines and newspapers (e.g., CD-ROM disk of SIRS, online access to periodical section of Electric Library, bookmarks for web sites that provide indexes for periodicals and/or texts from periodicals)
Reserve Room - Collections created by teachers and students that are organized around particular courses or curricular/content themes (e.g., Pfoots American Lit page). Collections could be Web sources or other online or CD-ROM sources. Example of a theme = Water (which could be an interdisciplinary course on water use, ecology, water politics, and geographical patterns).
Stacks
- The general collection of every referenced thing in the librarys collection (web site bookmarks, periodical title, books online, reference sources,...)
- A way to find any of the collection (like a subject index).
Card Catalog - An index of everything in the collection. Probably organized by subject, but ideally organized by author and date too.
Carrel - A private place for students to keep work in progress, including writing, bookmarks, electronic copies of documents. (Private does not mean no one can enter, although we could do that -- a student-level password requirement and a teacher-level or librarian-level override. There would also be something like a 30-day limit on carrel use.) A very good feature for the carrel would be a way to take and store notes electronically, while reading web sites or other docs. Maybe a simple text thang suffices.)
