Abstract |
This is a follow up on my recent demo of the Block World systems I did last summer for HP. The December Byte issue features some articles on “Objects for End Users.” I believe they are sort of “must read” papers for thouse of us dealing with object-oriented approaches since they represent the industrial view of how the future of OOP could (or WILL?) look like. It seems to me that the issues have become so complex (technology, politics, etc.) that the industries start driving technology and researchers have to catch up. Isn't that kind of sad? In the first article Cary Lu talks about implications, and limitations of state of the art object-oriented technology. He suggests that the Document Oriented Interface (DOI) will be more powerfull and intuitive than current interfaces. In a DOI end users could finally be able to focus on their objects of interests – documents – instead of being forced to deal with large numbers of applications. Lu also outlines the plans of Apple and Microsoft regarding DOI. Furthermore, he points out the political and social problems that, so far, have prevented the implementation of an idea that apprently is already 25 years old. Another point LU makes is that DOI will make the development of AGENTS much easier. |
