Abstract The dual-semantics of Prolog has been seen as one cause of the difficulties that novices have in learning the language. This may be reflected in the way in which learners understand examples of code, and thus the way in which such examples should be explained to them. This paper reports an empirical study that looks at the preferences learners have in the types of descriptions used about Prolog code. The study forms part of a series of empirical investigations into the way novices use examples when learning to program.
